Summer Fishing on Logan Martin Lake
Reed's Guide Service
Posted: 6/1/2005 Reed MontgomerySummer on Logan Martin Lake, can mean starting the season fishing on days with mild, upper 80 degree temperatures. By mid summer, anglers that dare to brave the heat, can see some very hot, summer days often hitting the 100 degree mark, with a heat index of about 120 degrees.
Most anglers (those that can't tolerate the grueling, midday highs often topping the 100 degree mark) simply resort to night fishing. This especially holds true for Logan Martin Lake's dedicated bass tournament anglers, especially with bass tournaments held lake wide every night, except Sunday! But some anglers are given no choice, they have to fish during the day. Like the 48 anglers that made it to the prestigious FLW Tour Championship scheduled for August 11-13 2004 on Logan Martin Lake. After all, the $500,000 first place payout, ought to keep them chunkin' instead of worrying about the heat! Even last place (48th) does not even have to catch a fish. Just survive the grueling, summertime fishing conditions for 3 days, and last place still gets $15,000 for his hard earned efforts. In the past, FLW Outdoors various bass tournament trails (FLW Tour, Everstart Series and the Walmart Bass Fishing League) have all fished the many lakes in Alabama in various seasons, including summer. But none have visited the Lake in August, for such a major world championship, with such a tremendous payout. This is when fishing conditions under the hot sweltering sun, can be the worst and only the strong survive. Past World Championships on Logan Martin Lake, have shown anglers (that fished such trails as the Bassmaster's Tour, Bassmaster's Open Series and the Bass Federation) qualify for the prestigious event, "The World Championship of Bass Fishing, The Bassmaster's Classic." Twelve Years ago, Robert Hamilton rocked the fishing world by winning the first Bassmaster's Classic held on Logan Martin Lake in 1992. Utilizing tactics while fishing (considerably deep water for this lake) on the Lakes lower end, he caught enough bass in 3 days of hot summer fishing conditions, in water as deep as 20 feet, on various lures and presentations, to win the world renowned event. Dropping heavy spinnerbaits, fishing deep-diving crankbaits on light line, using a lift-and-pause method with a one ounce Rattling Cordell Spot and fishing with jig combos, were the lures and methods Robert Hamilton used to secure his winning the 1992 Bassmaster's Classic Champion Title. The next year the 1993 Bassmaster's Classic returned to Logan Martin Lake. Again it was won fishing deep water on the mid to lower lake. David Fritts, like Robert Hamilton, fished deep diving crankbaits. He also added a Carolina-rigged lizard to the winning lure combination. Unlike Hamilton, that mostly fished a few spots in 3 days of intense competition, David Fritts had several dozen spots he would run and gun to, saving his best spots for last on the final day, to secure the title of the Worlds Best Bass Angler. In 1997 The Bassmaster's Classic returned to Logan Martin Lake, but this time it was won fishing in rather shallow water. Dion Hibdon mostly fished around piers, boat houses and along shallow drops in water less than 10 feet deep. A name sake Dion Hibdon Tube Bait was the winning lure. So it should be interesting to see who will collect the half a million dollar winning first place prize payout, the richest payout in Bass Fishing History, for winning the 2004 FLW Tour Championship this summer.
